Stump grinding is a process in which a machine called a stump grinder (or stump cutter) slices stumps into thin shavings of mulch. Our machine is very powerful and is capable of grinding a large stump in a short amount of time. Our standard is to grind every stump to 8 - 12 inches below grade and all surface roots around the stump; this ensures the entire stump and root system is removed.
Stump grinding is the quickest and most effective way of removing stumps. With grinding, the stump is sliced up into small pieces of mulch, and the ground is only disturbed in the immediate area. Excavating will take much longer; it will be messier, and it will destroy a larger area of the property. Many small- to medium-sized excavators are not capable of pulling out very large stumps. A bonus with grinding is that the mulch can be repurposed in your own yard or garden.
We take every precaution when doing work on your property. To protect your lawn, turf, or landscaping, we use equipment mats and wood to minimize the impact of the machine. We use protective mesh and plywood barriers around the stump to block any debris from the grinding. We will also have utilities located if necessary, and we do a full walkthrough of the area to identify any hidden secondary utility lines or other hazards. On every job, we treat your property like it's our own, and we leave the area as clean and undisturbed as possible.
There are a few ways we can clean up the spot where the stump was. Our standard is to leave the mulch on-site, backfill the hole with a mix of mulch and dirt and level the area with the surrounding grade while leaving a slight mound so that when the mulch decays over time, it won't become a depression. If there is a large amount of mulch from a large stump, we will backfill the hole and leave a pile of the mulch on top to be repurposed or disposed of at your discretion. Lastly, we always offer full cleanup and haul-away of the mulch if you would like the hole to stay open or be filled with dirt only. We can also seed for new grass after the hole is filled if you elect this option. The full clean-up option is not factored into our standard quotes/estimates unless specified.
